Room of Light and Shadow

Room of Light and Shadow:
Zoshigaya Missionary House Museum
Zoshigaya Missionary House Museum was constructed in 1907 by John Moody McCaleb, an American missionary. It is the oldest surviving modern wooden Western-style building in Toshima Ward and possesses high aesthetic and historical value.
In Japan, old Western-style mansions cherish the beauty of light and shadow, and this missionary residence is no exception. The way the light enters through the large windows and gradually fades, creating darkness, is impressive. It will be attractive not only to those who seek out Japan's history but also to those who take photographs.
The soft, subdued light will soothe you when you are tired from your busy daily life. Although it is a small building, we encourage you to take your time and explore it slowly.
In the spring, the cherry blossoms seen through the windows are quite impressive.
It's a 10-minute walk from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station. It's also not far from Ikebukuro Station, a major station in Tokyo. When you visit Japan, please consider stopping by.
